Special Trains From Jammu Deployed Amid High Taxi Fares and Travel Panic

As of May 9, 2025, escalating tensions along India’s northern borders have led to significant disruptions in train services, particularly affecting regions in Rajasthan and Jammu & Kashmir.

Indian Railways has announced multiple train cancellations and rescheduling, leaving thousands of passengers stranded and seeking alternative travel options. In Rajasthan, several trains have been either partially or fully cancelled. For instance, Train No. 12467, the Jaisalmer-Jaipur service, is now operating from Bikaner instead of Jaisalmer, effectively cancelling the segment between Jaisalmer and Bikaner. Additionally, Train No. 14807, the Jodhpur-Dadar Express, and Train No. 14864, the Jodhpur-Varanasi City Express, have been rescheduled with delays of up to three hours.

In response to the crisis, Indian Railways has deployed special trains to facilitate the movement of stranded passengers. Train No. 04612, comprising 12 unreserved and 12 reserved coaches, departed from Jammu at 10:45 AM. A special 20-coach Vande Bharat Express left Udhampur at 12:45 PM, passing through Jammu and Pathankot. Another fully reserved special train is scheduled to depart from Jammu at 7:00 PM. The sudden halt in train services has led to a surge in taxi fares, with passengers reporting exorbitant charges. One traveler recounted being quoted ₹30,000 for a taxi ride from Jammu to Delhi, a significant increase from the usual fare of approximately ₹10,090. Such price hikes have made it challenging for many to find affordable transportation, exacerbating the travel crisis.

Authorities are urging passengers to stay informed through official channels and to exercise caution while traveling. Given the fluid situation, travelers are advised to check the status of their trains regularly and to consider postponing non-essential journeys. The current disruptions underscore the broader impact of geopolitical tensions on civilian life, highlighting the need for robust contingency planning and support systems to assist those affected during such crises.
