Residents Call for Action on Contaminated Water Supply

Residents of Gurugram’s Sector 21 have escalated their concerns regarding the quality of their water supply, demanding immediate intervention from municipal and development authorities. For the past four months, the Residents’ Welfare Association (RWA) has been raising alarms about insufficient and contaminated water, but recent developments have intensified their calls for action.

In a recent letter addressed to both the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) and the Chief Executive Officer of the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), the RWA outlined the worsening situation. Over the last three weeks, the community has reported receiving water that is muddy, foul-smelling, and akin to sewer sludge. This alarming quality has led residents to question the efficacy of previous inspections and remedial measures. To substantiate their claims, the RWA had the water tested at the Water Bacteriological Lab at the District Civil Hospital of Gurugram. The findings, which deemed the water unfit for human consumption, were shared with key officials, including the Joint Commissioner and the Chief Engineer. Despite this, no effective remedial action has been observed.

The RWA suspects that the contamination might be linked to blocked sewer lines, a problem they have highlighted in numerous communications with authorities. “We have sent at least two dozen letters requesting the cleaning of internal sewer lines and have engaged with various officials, yet the issue remains unresolved,” stated the General Secretary of the RWA Sector 21 and Chairperson of ‘Jaago Gurugram’, an umbrella organisation representing 20 RWAs in Old Gurugram. The persistence of this issue underscores a significant challenge in municipal management and highlights the urgent need for responsive and effective intervention. As the situation continues to deteriorate, residents remain hopeful that their appeals will prompt a decisive response from the authorities to restore safe and clean water supply in their locality.
