The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has commenced emergency repairs on key roadways severely affected by the recent monsoon rains. In response to widespread damage, the GMDA is implementing temporary fixes to ensure that the roads remain passable until a permanent restoration can be completed post-monsoon. GMDA Chief Engineer Arun Dhankhar confirmed that repair work has begun on several severely impacted stretches. These provisional measures involve the use of substrate material to address immediate road usability concerns, while a comprehensive repair plan will be rolled out once the rains subside.
Heavy rainfall over the past week has led to significant infrastructural issues across the city. Notable damage includes the collapse of sections of Basai Road in Manohar Nagar and Arjun Nagar, as well as a severely affected 300-metre stretch of the Sector 85/86 road, extending from Elan Mall to Dadi Sati Chowk. This section has suffered not only from waterlogging but also from the spillage of sewage from Sikanderpur village, exacerbating the deterioration. “The road between Elan Mall and Dadi Sati Chowk, which was meant to serve as a vital corridor, is now a major inconvenience due to waterlogging and sewage issues,” said the president of the United Associations of New Gurugram, an umbrella body of several Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs). “This stretch requires immediate attention.”
The GMDA is also addressing road damage on the Southern Peripheral Road, where large potholes have emerged along a 300-metre stretch near the SPR police post. This has led to significant traffic congestion, exacerbating delays for daily commuters. Residents have reported severe traffic jams, particularly at intersections with traffic signals, such as those on Golf Course Extension Road and near Sector 95. In addition, roadways near the Civil Hospital in Sector 10 and the heavily trafficked stretch from the Dwarka Expressway cloverleaf on NH-48 towards the Southern Peripheral Road are also among the damaged areas under review. The GMDA’s swift action to repair these damaged roads aims to mitigate traffic disruptions and restore normalcy as quickly as possible. However, the full scope of road repairs will require extensive work beyond the temporary solutions currently in place.
