Pune Water Supply Gains Buffer From Heavy Monsoon

Pune: The city’s drinking water outlook has improved significantly after the four reservoirs supplying Pune reached full live storage following intense monsoon rainfall in their catchment areas. The rise in reservoir levels provides a stronger water buffer for the months ahead, while also highlighting the importance of managing extreme rainfall through resilient water infrastructure and sustainable resource planning.

The Khadakwasla dam system, comprising Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar reservoirs, reached 100 per cent live storage capacity, holding nearly 29.15 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) of water. This is higher than the storage recorded during the same period last year, reflecting the impact of above-normal rainfall across the Western Ghats. The Pune water supply network depends heavily on these reservoirs, which support daily consumption for a rapidly expanding urban population. With population growth, rising development activity and increasing demand from residential and commercial areas, maintaining reliable water availability has become a critical urban planning priority. Officials from the irrigation department said reservoir inflows remain steady despite a reduction in rainfall intensity over recent days. Controlled water releases through spillways, canals and power generation systems are being adjusted according to inflow patterns and weather conditions to maintain safe storage levels.

Other important water sources in the region have also recorded strong storage levels. Bhama Askhed reservoir, which contributes to Pune’s drinking water requirements, has approached full capacity, while Pavana dam, a key source for Pimpri-Chinchwad, is also close to maximum storage. These improved levels have reduced immediate concerns around water availability across the wider metropolitan region. Meteorological data indicates that several areas in Pune district’s hill zones received exceptionally high seasonal rainfall. The Mulshi and Maval regions recorded some of the highest precipitation levels, contributing significantly to reservoir recharge. However, experts note that heavy rainfall events also require careful management to prevent downstream flooding, erosion and damage to settlements located near river systems. The Pune water supply situation demonstrates the growing connection between climate patterns and urban resilience. While strong monsoon rainfall can secure water resources, changing rainfall behaviour—with shorter periods of intense precipitation—requires cities to improve storage management, protect natural water bodies and reduce losses within distribution networks.

Water management specialists believe future planning must focus on balancing supply security with environmental protection. Measures such as watershed conservation, groundwater recharge, efficient water use and preservation of catchment areas will become increasingly important as urban regions face both water abundance and scarcity risks at different times of the year. Authorities have advised residents living near low-lying areas and riverbanks to remain cautious as controlled releases continue from reservoirs. Weather agencies are also monitoring rainfall activity in the Western Ghats, where further showers are expected in the short term. With reservoirs currently providing a strong seasonal reserve, Pune has gained a temporary advantage in managing its water needs. The long-term challenge will be ensuring that this security is supported by sustainable planning, efficient infrastructure and climate-ready urban policies.
