Pune rain caused severe waterlogging across parts of the district on Monday, disrupting traffic, damaging goods at temporary Diwali stalls and affecting road movement in rural and urban areas after intense overnight showers. Indapur recorded 131 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am, the highest in Pune district, while Pune city recorded 41.1 mm at Shivajinagar during the same period.
Baramati received 77.2 mm of rain, while Ambegaon recorded 49.5 mm. Shirur and Dhamdhere received 39 mm and 39.5 mm, respectively. In Pune city, Hadapsar recorded 35.5 mm, Haveli 35 mm and Magarpatta 30.5 mm.
The heaviest impact was reported in Pune rural areas, particularly around Baramati and Indapur, where accumulated rainwater affected several roads and internal lanes. Chakan also experienced severe waterlogging, disrupting movement on roads. In the city, water accumulation slowed traffic during the Monday morning rush, while several traffic signals stopped functioning.
The showers began around 8.30 pm on Sunday and intensified after midnight. Rain continued into Monday morning, with showers still reported after 9 am. Traffic police said vehicle movement had slowed because of water accumulation and continuing rainfall.
The rain also caused tree branches to fall at several locations. A large tree collapsed in the Khadki Bazaar area around midnight, although no injuries were reported. Fire brigade personnel cleared fallen branches and trees to restore traffic movement.
Temporary Diwali stalls around Mahatma Phule Mandai and Shaniwar Peth were also affected. Rainwater entered shops and damaged merchandise, leaving traders and vendors attempting to protect their goods during the festive shopping period.
The disruption highlights the immediate operational pressure that intense rainfall places on Pune’s road network, traffic systems, roadside commerce and emergency response arrangements. The impact was spread across both dense city neighbourhoods and rural regions, with waterlogging affecting movement at a time of heavy commuter and commercial activity.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast mainly clear skies turning partly cloudy towards Monday afternoon or evening, with very light to light rain likely. The weather department has issued a rain alert for Pune and surrounding areas for two days.
