Baramati Heavy Rain Brings Relief but Turns Roads Into Rivers

Baramati recorded 158 mm of rain by 8 am on Monday, November 2, while rainfall continued for nearly three more hours, bringing the reported total above 200 mm in parts of the city and taluka. The intense spell flooded sections of Bhigwan Road, disrupted normal movement and led schools in the city to declare a holiday.

The rainfall came as Baramati and surrounding areas were facing water stress. Several wells and borewells had recorded falling water levels, and residents in both rain-fed and irrigated parts of the taluka had begun experiencing water-related difficulties. The rain has brought relief to sugarcane growers and farmers cultivating fodder crops, according to the report.

Water accumulated on the Vidya Pratishthan ground near the memorial of former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, giving the area the appearance of a pond. Bhigwan Road was also reported to have taken on the appearance of a lake after the heavy downpour. Municipal and private schools in the city were closed as a precautionary measure.

Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar contacted Baramati Sub-Divisional Officer Uttam Dighe and Municipal Council Chief Officer Pankaj Bhuse by telephone to review the situation. She instructed the administration to take immediate measures to prevent inconvenience to residents and ensure that essential services and daily life return to normal.

Officials told her that although water had accumulated at several locations, there had been no reports of structural collapse or loss of life or property. They also said there was no immediate flood threat. The administration was directed to arrange urgent drainage at waterlogged locations, including Bhigwan Road, and to maintain coordination among all relevant departments.

The directions also included keeping emergency systems and personnel ready, monitoring rainfall conditions across the city and taluka, and taking preventive measures wherever necessary. Officials were asked to inspect areas for possible rain-related damage, prepare damage assessment records where required and submit reports.

Rainfall distribution across the taluka remained uneven. KVK Malegaon Budruk recorded 94.8 mm, while Sawantwadi received 80 mm. Barhanpur and Dorlewadi each recorded 78 mm, followed by Gunawadi at 74 mm, Jainakwadi at 68 mm, and Murti and Anjangaon at 65 mm each.

Jalgaon Kasba recorded 60 mm, the Baramati Agro factory area 56 mm, Jalgaon Supe 55 mm, Chandgudewadi 46 mm and Sayambachiwadi 45 mm. In contrast, Malegaon Colony received 8 mm, while Morgaon, Supe and Sangvi recorded 7 mm each. Undawadi Kasba recorded 6 mm, Vadgaon Nimbalkar 5 mm and Chaudharwadi only 3.5 mm.

The administration has been instructed to continue monitoring conditions, inspect possible damage and keep emergency arrangements ready while drainage work is carried out in waterlogged parts of Baramati.
