Pune Rail Infrastructure Gets Critical Yard Upgrade
Pune’s railway infrastructure has received a targeted engineering upgrade with Central Railway completing the conversion of a key Diamond Double Slip at Pune Yard from a 52 kg to a 60 kg configuration. The intervention is designed to improve track strength and reliability at a complex junction where multiple rail movements converge, with potential implications for operational efficiency and the resilience of Pune’s wider public transport network.
The upgraded structure, identified as DDS No. 251/252, is the fourth Diamond Double Slip at the yard to undergo the heavier-rail conversion. A Diamond Double Slip is a specialised track arrangement that allows trains to cross and switch between routes within a compact area. Because it combines crossing and switching functions, the equipment is subject to considerable operational and mechanical demands. The engineering work extended beyond simply replacing rails. Railway teams changed associated crossings, track components and signalling equipment to accommodate the upgraded arrangement. The move reflects a broader shift towards strengthening critical railway assets rather than relying only on routine maintenance after components deteriorate. For a growing urban region such as Pune, the condition of railway infrastructure has consequences beyond train operations.
