Pune Rail Disruption Exposes Gaps In Trackside Safety
A cattle strike involving the Panvel–Hazur Sahib Nanded Express disrupted rail movement on the Pune–Daund corridor, after damage to the overhead electrical system brought services to a halt between Hadapsar and Loni. The incident has highlighted a persistent operational risk along fast-developing urban and peri-urban rail corridors, where railway infrastructure increasingly shares space with settlements, agricultural activity and unmanaged livestock movement.
Train 17613, which operates from Panvel to Hazur Sahib Nanded, was travelling towards Nanded when cattle entered the railway alignment, according to the incident details provided by railway authorities. The locomotive hit the animals, damaging the overhead equipment, or OHE, that supplies electricity to electric trains. Public timetable data confirms that the service operates through Pune and Daund on its route to Nanded. The immediate consequence was not limited to one train. Damage to the electrical supply affected train movements on the section, leaving several services waiting at different locations. Among the affected services were long-distance trains as well as the Pune–Daund local service, creating knock-on delays for passengers travelling between Pune and eastern Maharashtra.
For commuters, the disruption illustrates how a relatively local infrastructure failure can quickly become a network-wide problem. Electrified railways depend on continuous power and tightly coordinated signalling and traffic management. When an overhead line is damaged, trains cannot simply bypass the affected section, making restoration work and safety inspections necessary before normal operations can resume. The episode also raises a wider question about Pune railway safety as development spreads along the Pune–Daund corridor. Rail lines passing through expanding settlements can face increasing interaction with livestock, pedestrians, informal crossings and other trackside activity. Urban planners and transport experts have long stressed that railway expansion must be accompanied by better separation between operating infrastructure and surrounding land uses. The economic cost of such interruptions extends beyond passenger inconvenience. Delayed trains can affect workers, students, freight-linked activity and connecting services, while repeated disruptions can reduce confidence in rail as a dependable alternative to road travel. Reliable rail capacity is particularly important for a growing city such as Pune, where road congestion and emissions make efficient public transport increasingly valuable.
The railway administration moved repair teams to the affected location to restore the damaged OHE and resume services. The immediate priority is therefore restoration, but the longer-term lesson is Pune railway safety needs to be considered as part of corridor planning, not only as an operational issue after an accident. As Pune expands towards its eastern fringe, protecting railway infrastructure will require stronger trackside controls, safer crossings and closer coordination between transport and local authorities. Preventing the next disruption may ultimately matter as much as repairing this one.
