Pune Police have suspended Senior Police Inspector Vishwajeet Jagtap after a Rs 30 lakh robbery reported in the Market Yard area was allegedly recorded only as a missing-person or missing-property entry instead of being registered as a cognisable offence.
The action was ordered by Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar following a preliminary inquiry into the handling of the complaint. According to the report, the robbery took place on October 7 within the jurisdiction of the Market Yard police station.
The complainant reportedly approached the police station to register a complaint. However, despite the circumstances indicating that a serious criminal offence had occurred, Jagtap allegedly did not register a robbery case and instead recorded the matter as a missing entry. The police have treated this as an attempt to suppress information about the incident.
A preliminary departmental inquiry found Jagtap’s conduct to be irresponsible, the report said. The inquiry examined his handling of the complaint and the decision not to register a formal criminal case. The action has been taken pending a departmental investigation, which will determine further responsibility under the applicable service and disciplinary procedures.
During the suspension period, Jagtap has been directed to report daily to the police control room. The order removes him from regular police-station duties while the departmental process continues.
The case highlights the importance of accurate crime registration at the police-station level. A missing entry and a formal case relating to robbery trigger different investigative and administrative procedures, including the recording of the offence, assignment of investigators and monitoring by senior officers. The report did not provide details of arrests, recovery of the stolen money or the status of the robbery investigation.
The suspension also places responsibility on the police administration to establish how the complaint was handled, whether the alleged failure affected the investigation and what action may follow from the departmental inquiry. The police commissioner’s order is the immediate administrative response, while the underlying criminal investigation remains a separate process.
Jagtap is required to continue reporting to the control room each day until further orders. The departmental inquiry will determine the next steps in the matter.
