Pune’s proposed semi high-speed rail corridor to Nashik has entered a fresh phase of technical scrutiny after the Maharashtra government constituted an expert panel to assess whether the project can advance without compromising one of India’s most significant scientific research facilities. The review is expected to shape future infrastructure planning by weighing transport efficiency against environmental sensitivity and long-term public interest.

The committee has been tasked with evaluating the proposed Pune Nashik rail project and its potential impact on the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) at Khodad, a globally recognised radio astronomy observatory. Authorities will examine whether the original railway alignment can be retained or modified without affecting the radio-quiet environment required for astronomical observations. The review follows concerns raised by scientific institutions and central government agencies over the possibility that railway operations could generate electromagnetic interference capable of disrupting sensitive research. Those concerns had earlier prompted planners to explore alternative alignments that bypass the observatory, although questions remained over the impact on travel efficiency, project costs and regional connectivity.

According to officials, the newly formed committee will compare the original and revised alignments while also assessing engineering alternatives such as tunnels, elevated sections and limited route modifications. The objective is to determine whether transport infrastructure can coexist with critical scientific assets without compromising either operational performance or research capability. Beyond technical feasibility, the Pune Nashik rail project will be assessed for its wider economic, environmental and social implications. The study will examine travel time, land acquisition requirements, construction costs, industrial access, agricultural connectivity and long-term regional development outcomes. Urban planners say such comprehensive evaluations are becoming increasingly important as cities pursue large-scale transport investments while protecting environmentally and scientifically sensitive locations. The proposed rail corridor is expected to strengthen links between Pune and Nashik, two of Maharashtra’s fastest-growing economic centres with expanding manufacturing, logistics and education sectors. Improved rail connectivity could support regional productivity, reduce dependence on road transport and encourage more sustainable travel patterns. However, experts note that infrastructure expansion must also safeguard nationally important research institutions whose work contributes to science, innovation and technological advancement.

The committee has been authorised to consult railway authorities, scientific organisations, environmental experts and government agencies before finalising its recommendations. Specialists in railway engineering, radio astronomy and electromagnetics are also expected to provide technical inputs to support evidence-based decision-making. The panel has been asked to submit its report within 60 days. Its findings will guide the next stage of planning for the corridor and could establish a broader framework for integrating transport development with scientific conservation, resilient infrastructure and sustainable urban growth across Maharashtra.
