Pune’s proposed semi high-speed rail connection with Nashik is set for a fresh technical review after the Maharashtra government constituted an expert committee to examine whether the project’s original alignment can proceed without affecting one of India’s most significant scientific research facilities. The outcome could shape not only the future of the rail corridor but also how major infrastructure projects are planned around nationally important research assets.
The newly formed panel has been asked to assess the Pune Nashik rail route and determine whether the alignment outlined in the Detailed Project Report can be restored while safeguarding the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) at Khodad in Pune district. The observatory, among the world’s leading radio astronomy facilities, requires an environment free from electromagnetic interference to conduct highly sensitive observations. The review comes after scientific institutions and central government agencies raised concerns that rail operations along the original corridor could interfere with astronomical research. Those objections had prompted railway authorities to develop an alternative alignment through Ahilyanagar and Shirdi, although questions remained over its economic and connectivity implications.
Rather than adopting a single option, the committee will undertake a comparative evaluation of both alignments. The assessment is expected to consider technical feasibility alongside travel efficiency, project costs, land acquisition, industrial access, agricultural connectivity and wider socio-economic outcomes. Urban development experts say such multi-dimensional reviews are becoming increasingly important as transport infrastructure expands into environmentally and scientifically sensitive landscapes. The Pune Nashik rail route is viewed as a strategic project to strengthen mobility between two of Maharashtra’s major industrial and manufacturing centres. Faster rail connectivity could improve freight movement, expand labour markets and support regional economic growth while reducing dependence on road transport. However, planners increasingly face the challenge of ensuring that infrastructure investments do not compromise critical scientific institutions or environmentally sensitive zones. Officials indicated that the committee will engage with railway authorities, scientific organisations, environmental specialists and state agencies before finalising its recommendations. Experts in railway engineering, radio astronomy and electromagnetics may also contribute technical inputs to support evidence-based decision-making.
The panel has been directed to submit its report within 60 days. Its findings are expected to guide the next phase of the project, offering policymakers an opportunity to align transport expansion with scientific preservation, sustainable regional development and long-term public interest.
