Pune’s proposed rail link with Nashik has entered another round of technical scrutiny after Maharashtra ordered a fresh assessment of the corridor’s original alignment near the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope at Khodad. The review could determine whether engineering solutions can preserve the direct route without compromising scientific operations, potentially reshaping the connectivity and development prospects of several towns between Pune and Nashik.

The decision follows a long-running conflict between transport infrastructure and the specialised operating conditions required by the GMRT. The observatory, located about 80 km north of Pune, comprises 30 steerable 45-metre antennas spread across roughly 25 km. It operates at low radio frequencies where man-made interference can affect astronomical observations. That makes the Pune Nashik rail corridor unusual from a planning perspective. A conventional infrastructure assessment might weigh construction cost, land acquisition, travel time and connectivity. Here, the alignment must also be tested against the scientific sensitivity of an internationally significant research facility.

The original direct route had received in-principle approval from the Railway Ministry in 2023, but concerns over potential interference prompted work on an alternative. The revised proposal subsequently moved towards a route through Ahilyanagar and Shirdi. Parliament records confirm that the earlier alignment was considered unsuitable because of its potential impact on GMRT operations. The route change has economic consequences. The original corridor was expected to improve access for settlements and agricultural areas along the Pune-Nashik belt while strengthening links to industrial and employment centres. A different alignment could distribute those benefits differently, affecting travel demand, land values and future development patterns. At the same time, the scientific constraint cannot be treated as a secondary planning issue. The GMRT is a major national research asset and is used by astronomers internationally. Its upgraded system operates across several radio-frequency bands, making protection from unwanted electromagnetic signals an ongoing operational requirement.

The newly constituted committee has 60 days to examine whether the original alignment, or a technically modified version involving measures such as tunnelling or elevated sections, can coexist with the observatory. Project agencies have been asked to provide alignment drawings, surveys, cost estimates and detailed project reports for comparison. For the Pune Nashik rail corridor, the review offers an opportunity to move beyond a binary choice between connectivity and scientific protection. A robust assessment should compare full lifecycle costs, construction impacts, land acquisition, accessibility and environmental effects alongside radio-interference risks. The eventual route will shape more than journey times. It will influence where housing, industry and logistics expand across the region. The priority now is a transparent technical decision that protects scientific infrastructure while ensuring public investment delivers broad, durable connectivity without creating avoidable environmental or social costs.
