Pune Metro Line Three Adopts Modern Rail Power

Pune is preparing to introduce a new chapter in its urban transport network as Metro Line 3 advances towards commercial operations with the adoption of a third-rail power system, a technology already used in several major metro networks across India and globally. The move is expected to improve operational efficiency, support higher service frequency and strengthen sustainable public transport across one of the city’s fastest-growing economic corridors.

The 23-kilometre corridor connecting Hinjawadi and Shivajinagar will become the city’s first rapid transit route to operate using a 750-volt DC third-rail electrification system. Unlike conventional Metro systems that draw power through overhead wires, the third-rail approach supplies electricity through an additional rail positioned alongside the tracks. Trains collect power using specialised equipment mounted beneath each coach, eliminating the need for overhead cables and supporting a less visually intrusive transport corridor. The introduction of the third rail system reflects a wider shift towards modern metro technologies that optimise performance while reducing maintenance requirements. Urban transport specialists note that the system is particularly suited to densely populated cities where frequent services, efficient energy distribution and reliable operations are essential for encouraging greater public transport usage. The absence of overhead infrastructure also contributes to cleaner streetscapes and greater flexibility in station and bridge design.

The third rail system is expected to play a key role in supporting growing commuter demand between Pune’s expanding information technology hub in Hinjawadi and major residential, educational and commercial districts including Wakad, Baner, Balewadi, University Circle and Shivajinagar. As employment centres continue to expand along this corridor, dependable mass transit will become increasingly important in reducing dependence on private vehicles and easing pressure on road infrastructure. Metro Line 3 will also integrate Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC), an advanced digital signalling system that enables continuous communication between trains and operational control systems. This technology allows trains to operate safely with shorter intervals, improving passenger capacity while maintaining high operational standards. Experts consider CBTC a critical element of next-generation metro systems because it enhances network efficiency and supports future automation upgrades. The corridor has already completed end-to-end trial operations across its elevated alignment and is now awaiting statutory and regulatory clearances before passenger services begin. Authorities intend to commission the line in phases, initially opening a section between Maan and the R K Laxman Museum before extending services to District Court station, where the route will connect with Pune’s existing Metro network.

Urban planners believe the third rail system represents more than a technological upgrade. It supports Pune’s long-term ambition of creating an integrated, low-carbon mobility network capable of reducing congestion, improving air quality and strengthening regional economic productivity. Faster and more reliable public transport can also encourage transit-oriented development, promoting compact urban growth around Metro stations rather than continued dependence on private vehicles. As Metro Line 3 approaches completion, the successful deployment of the third rail system will be closely watched as an important milestone in Pune’s transition towards more resilient, efficient and environmentally responsible urban mobility.
