Pune Approves Wider Yerawada Mobility Corridor Plan
Pune has moved a step closer to upgrading one of its busiest transport corridors after the civic administration approved plans to increase the planned width of a key road linking Yerawada with Sangamwadi. The decision is expected to support long-term traffic management, improve connectivity to major commercial and residential districts, and create opportunities for more integrated urban transport planning as the city continues to expand.
The approval allows the proposed Yerawada road widening project to increase the designated corridor width from 20 metres to 30 metres between Bindumadhav Thackeray Chowk, Sangamwadi and Ambedkar Chowk. The proposal received clearance despite objections raised by an educational institution located along the alignment, following a statutory review process undertaken by the civic administration. Municipal officials stated that the objection was examined during administrative hearings before a final decision was taken in favour of retaining the wider road reservation. Authorities concluded that the revised corridor width serves a broader public purpose by accommodating future transport demand and supporting planned infrastructure improvements in the surrounding area.
The approval represents an important planning milestone rather than the immediate commencement of construction. With the corridor width now formally adopted, civic authorities can proceed with subsequent stages including land acquisition, detailed engineering, statutory approvals and phased execution. These processes will determine the project’s implementation timeline while ensuring compliance with planning and regulatory requirements. The Yerawada road widening initiative is expected to benefit commuters travelling between Pune Railway Station, Sangamwadi, Yerawada, Viman Nagar and the Nagar Road corridor.
