Pune Dowry Harassment Case: Husband Held After Woman’s Death

A Pune dowry harassment case has resulted in the arrest of a woman’s husband after her death in Khed-Shivapur, while her family has alleged that repeated demands for gold, money and transfer of her share of land led to sustained physical and mental harassment.

Payal Pawar-Zambre, who had been married for seven years, died after taking what the report described as an extreme step on Monday. The incident was reported from Shriramnagar in Khed-Shivapur, in Haveli taluka. Her family, however, has alleged that she was killed by her in-laws. The allegation has not been established as fact in the material available.

Swargate police have arrested her husband, Akshay Balasaheb Zambre, in connection with the case, according to the report published by Pudhari. Payal’s mother-in-law Mangal Zambre, father-in-law Balasaheb Zambre and sister-in-law Akshata Zambre-Nimhan have been reported absconding.

The family has alleged that demands for dowry continued after the marriage. According to the report, Payal’s family said they had been asked to provide between five and 10 tolas of gold every Diwali. They allegedly met earlier demands to prevent her from facing further trouble at her marital home.

This year, the family was reportedly asked for 10 tolas of gold and was also pressured to transfer land belonging to Payal’s share in her name to her husband. The family said it could not meet the demand because it was facing drought-related financial difficulties and belonged to a farming background. It reportedly told the marital family that a larger amount could be provided during the following Diwali.

Payal’s father, Ravindra Krishna Pawar, told the media that demands had begun soon after the marriage. He recalled being questioned about a silver decoration on the day after the wedding and said the demands later extended to gold, silver, money and Payal’s property share. The report also identified Pawar as a farmer and businessman from Shriramnagar and said Payal was the niece of Rajendra Pawar, the Nationalist Congress Party’s Khadakwasla assembly constituency president.

The case has drawn attention because it involves alleged dowry demands alongside pressure over a woman’s inherited property share. Under Indian law, allegations of dowry harassment and abetment of suicide or other offences must be examined through the police investigation and subsequent legal proceedings. The family’s allegation of murder will likewise require investigation and evidence before it can be legally established.

The immediate official action reported so far is the arrest of Akshay Zambre and the effort to trace the three other accused persons named in the case. Further details about the police case, the exact charges, forensic findings and the next court proceedings were not available in the supplied report.
