Kochi Metro Targets New Revenue With Station Naming, Bus Ads

Kochi Metro Rail Ltd is moving to expand its non-ticket revenue by offering semi-naming rights at stations and advertising space on feeder buses, as the operator seeks to strengthen income beyond passenger fares. Discussions to add an advertiser’s name to Vyttila Metro station have reached the final stage, according to a report by Kerala Kaumudi – Kochi.

The proposed arrangement would make Vyttila the latest station to generate revenue through semi-naming. With the move, all Kochi Metro stations are expected to provide some form of income through semi-naming arrangements, the report said. The specific advertiser, commercial terms and start date for the Vyttila arrangement were not disclosed.

Kochi Metro is also considering placing advertisements on its feeder buses. The buses connect metro stations with surrounding neighbourhoods and are part of the system’s wider effort to extend access beyond the rail network. The report did not provide details on the number of buses involved, the proposed advertising format or the expected income from the plan.

The decisions were taken during a review meeting led by Kochi Metro managing director G. Priyanka. The meeting examined the organisation’s focus on increasing non-ticket revenue alongside ticket income. Station branding and vehicle advertising are among the commercial options available to urban rail systems because they can generate revenue from the infrastructure and services used by passengers without depending entirely on fare collection.

The review also covered vacancies in the projects, operations, finance, human resources and information technology departments. Priyanka directed officials to fill the vacancies within a defined schedule, with recruitment procedures to be completed during November and December. The report did not specify the number of vacant posts or the designations involved.

The meeting was attended by directors including Dr M.P. Ram Navaz of projects, Sanjay Kumar of systems and Ravindra Kumar Pathak of finance. Their participation places the revenue measures alongside project, operational and financial administration rather than treating them as an isolated advertising initiative.

Kochi Metro’s next stated milestones are the completion of discussions on the Vyttila station semi-naming arrangement and the conclusion of recruitment procedures during November and December. Details on the advertiser, commercial structure and feeder-bus advertising plan will determine how the proposed measures are implemented.
