Pune Civic Theatres Get Repairs After Facilities Fail Artists

The Pune Municipal Corporation has begun repairs at civic auditoriums after artists raised repeated concerns about leaking roofs, faulty air-conditioning, damaged seating and unhygienic toilets at venues used for performances and public programmes.

The most immediate disruption is at Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Cultural Bhavan on Ghole Road, which has been closed since November 1. The auditorium may reopen after November 10, once repairs to its seating, air-conditioning system and roof waterproofing are completed. No performances or other programmes can be held at the venue while the work is under way.

At Bal Gandharva Rangmandir, the PMC is renovating washroom facilities following complaints about poor hygiene. Unlike the Ghole Road auditorium, the venue has not been shut, and plays and other events are continuing alongside the repair work.

Artists have said the maintenance problems extend beyond individual facilities. Damaged chairs, unreliable cooling systems and rainwater entering auditoriums through leaking roofs have affected both performers and audiences. The problems are particularly significant during long programmes, when seating, indoor temperature and basic sanitation directly shape the experience inside the venue.

The PMC is also planning repairs at Yashwantrao Chavan Natyagruha in Kothrud. The proposed work covers the stage, sound system, seating and VIP room. The repairs could take approximately two months, although the schedule has not yet been finalised.

The three venues reflect different stages of the civic body’s maintenance response. Work at Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Cultural Bhavan has required a temporary closure because several core components are being repaired at the same time. At Bal Gandharva Rangmandir, the PMC is carrying out work without stopping performances. The Kothrud auditorium remains at the planning stage, with the duration known but the final timetable still pending.

For audiences, the repairs are likely to affect venue availability and event arrangements in the short term, particularly while the Ghole Road auditorium remains closed. For artists and organisers, the condition of seating, cooling, roofs, washrooms and technical systems determines whether civic auditoriums can reliably host performances and cultural programmes.

The immediate challenge for the PMC is to complete the ongoing work and finalise the schedule for Yashwantrao Chavan Natyagruha. Artists have also called attention to the need for consistent upkeep, as recurring complaints about basic facilities suggest that repairs will need to be followed by regular maintenance across the civic theatre network.
