Pune Autorickshaw Fare Hike Raises Commuting Costs
Daily travel by autorickshaw in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad will become more expensive from September 1 after transport authorities approved a revised fare structure across Pune district. The decision reflects rising operating costs for drivers but is also expected to increase commuting expenses for thousands of residents who rely on autorickshaws for first- and last-mile connectivity, reinforcing the need for affordable and integrated urban mobility solutions.
The Regional Transport Authority has approved a new Pune autorickshaw fare hike, increasing the minimum fare for the first 1.5 kilometres from ₹25 to ₹30, while the charge for every additional kilometre will rise from ₹17 to ₹20. The revised rates will apply to all licensed autorickshaws operating across the district after coming into effect next month. Transport officials said the fare revision follows a review of operating expenses, including increases in compressed natural gas (CNG) prices, vehicle maintenance, spare parts, insurance premiums and other input costs. The revised fare structure has been determined using an established formula that considers changes in fuel prices and operational expenditure to maintain the economic viability of public transport services.
The Pune autorickshaw fare hike marks the fourth revision since 2021, highlighting the sustained impact of inflation on urban transport. While the increase is expected to provide financial relief to nearly 1.5 lakh autorickshaw operators across the district, it also raises concerns about affordability for commuters who depend on autos to bridge gaps in the city’s public transport network. Authorities have made recalibration of electronic fare meters mandatory to ensure uniform implementation of the revised rates. Operators have been given six months to complete the recalibration process. During the transition period, drivers will be required to display official fare charts prominently inside their vehicles to help passengers verify charges and reduce disputes. Urban mobility experts note that fare revisions are necessary to sustain essential transport services, particularly where operating costs continue to rise. However, they argue that fare increases should be accompanied by stronger regulatory enforcement and service quality improvements. Reliable first- and last-mile connectivity remains critical for encouraging greater use of Metro services, buses and other forms of shared transport, reducing dependence on private vehicles and supporting lower urban emissions.
Many commuters have expressed concerns that higher fares should be matched by improved passenger experience. Issues such as refusal of short-distance trips, overcharging and failure to use fare meters continue to affect public confidence in autorickshaw services. Transport planners suggest that stricter enforcement, digital fare monitoring and grievance redressal systems could improve accountability while ensuring that both passengers and drivers benefit from a transparent fare regime. As Pune continues to expand into a larger metropolitan region, balancing affordable mobility with the financial sustainability of transport operators will remain a key policy challenge. Future fare decisions are likely to be judged not only by cost recovery but also by their ability to strengthen integrated, accessible and citizen-focused urban transport.
