Pune Airport Metro Link Advances Regional Connectivity
Pune is moving closer to establishing a direct Metro connection to its international airport, a long-awaited transport upgrade that could significantly improve multimodal connectivity for passengers while strengthening the city’s broader sustainable mobility network. The proposed corridor, linking Kalyani Nagar Metro station with Pune International Airport at Lohegaon, is expected to reduce dependence on private vehicles and bridge one of the city’s key public transport gaps.
The proposed airport extension has completed its initial planning stage and will now proceed through municipal, state and central government approval processes before implementation. Once operational, the route will provide seamless Metro access to the airport from both Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, integrating aviation infrastructure with the region’s expanding mass transit system. At present, Metro passengers travelling towards the airport must disembark at Yerawada and rely on taxis, auto-rickshaws or buses for the final stretch of the journey. Transport planners have long identified this missing last-mile connection as a barrier to increasing Metro ridership among air travellers. The Pune airport Metro link is expected to eliminate this transfer, making public transport a more practical option for business travellers, daily commuters and visitors.
The corridor is also strategically positioned within Pune Metro’s growing network. Kalyani Nagar lies on the operational east-west Metro line and is expected to become an increasingly important interchange as future corridors are commissioned. Existing connectivity between the PCMC-Swargate and Vanaz-Ramwadi lines, along with upcoming routes towards Hinjewadi, Kharadi and Khadakwasla, could allow passengers from multiple parts of the metropolitan region to reach the airport without depending on road-based transport. Alongside the airport proposal, transport authorities are reviewing wider infrastructure upgrades aimed at easing congestion on western Pune’s busy corridors. Revised plans are being prepared for double-decker structures along sections of the Vanaz-Chandni Chowk extension, combining elevated Metro infrastructure with road traffic on separate levels. Similar concepts are under consideration on stretches between Paud Phata and Vandevi Temple, where recurring bottlenecks affect thousands of commuters each day. Urban mobility experts note that integrating Metro expansion with road redesign can improve travel efficiency without requiring extensive additional land acquisition. However, they also caution that infrastructure projects should prioritise safe pedestrian access, multimodal integration and environmental sustainability to ensure long-term public value rather than simply increasing road capacity.
Authorities are also examining the possibility of extending future Metro corridors beyond the currently proposed limits to improve connectivity across rapidly developing residential and employment centres. Such network expansion could support balanced urban growth while reducing pressure on private vehicle use and improving regional accessibility. The Pune airport Metro link represents more than an airport access project. It reflects a broader shift towards integrated transport planning, where Metro systems, airports and urban infrastructure function as connected public assets. As Pune continues to expand, delivering efficient and low-carbon mobility links will remain central to supporting economic growth, improving commuter convenience and building a more climate-resilient metropolitan transport network.
