Puducherry heavy rains inundated roads, disrupted traffic and affected daily wage earners, prompting the administration to close all government and privately managed schools in the Puducherry and Karaikal regions on Thursday.
Puducherry and its suburbs received heavy overnight rainfall, with several areas reporting water accumulation on roads and in low-lying locations. The downpour affected daily movement and disrupted traffic, according to a report by PTI published by Deccan Chronicle.
Puducherry recorded 7 cm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Thursday, official sources said. The rainfall led the administration to declare a holiday for all government-run and privately managed schools in both regions.
Minister A Namassivayam announced the school closure as authorities responded to the weather conditions. The decision covers schools in Puducherry as well as the Karaikal region, although the report did not specify when regular classes would resume.
A control room has been established to receive emergency calls and coordinate assistance. Official sources told PTI that the revenue department and other government departments were fully prepared to respond to any exigencies arising from the rain.
The rainfall has also brought renewed attention to water drainage in low-lying parts of Puducherry. On Wednesday, Pro Tem Speaker A Anbalagan submitted a petition to Chief Minister N Rangasamy seeking steps to drain accumulated water from such areas. The administration’s control room and departmental response will now be central to handling emergency requests as rain-related disruption continues.
