Tamil Nadu has increased the monthly miscellaneous funds available to police stations across the state, with the government saying the move is intended to improve policing conditions and reduce the scope for corruption linked to routine expenses. The additional allocation announced for the police department is Rs 71,01,54,000.
Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announced the increase during the debate in the State Assembly on the demands for funds for the police department, according to an official press release. The revised allocations apply to police stations across Tamil Nadu and have been framed as part of efforts to maintain law and order, protect children and women, and uphold public peace.
Under the revised arrangement, police stations that were receiving Rs 3,750 a month for miscellaneous expenses will now receive Rs 30,000. Stations previously allocated Rs 6,000 will receive Rs 40,000, while those receiving Rs 8,250 will now get Rs 50,000, the release said.
The government said the higher allocation takes into account the increase in costs. The stated objective is to provide police stations with sufficient official funding for miscellaneous requirements and thereby reduce the need for informal payments or other practices that can contribute to corruption at the station level.
Miscellaneous expenses are a routine but important part of police-station administration. They can affect the ability of local stations to manage day-to-day operations, respond to complaints and maintain basic public-facing services. The announcement therefore places the issue within the broader question of how policing is funded and administered below the state headquarters level.
The additional allocation also links police-station finances with the government’s stated priorities on public safety. The official release specifically referred to maintaining law and order, creating conditions for the safety of children and women, and preserving public peace. It did not provide a station-wise breakdown of the revised amounts or specify when the new allocations would begin to be disbursed.
The announcement was made as part of the Assembly’s consideration of funding demands for the police department. Further details on the administrative process for releasing the revised monthly amounts were not included in the information available in the official release cited by the report.
