Tamil Nadu has recorded widespread heavy rainfall, with Oothu in Tirunelveli district receiving the highest total of 128 mm in the past 24 hours, according to a report by Dinamalar citing the Meteorological Centre. The report said heavy rain is expected to continue as a low-pressure area is forecast to form over the Bay of Bengal on October 23.
The rainfall has been reported across several districts and locations, including the coastal centres of Tiruchendur, Kayalpattinam and Valinokkam, as well as parts of southern Tamil Nadu, the Western Ghats and northern districts. Tiruchendur recorded 117.6 mm, while Kayalpattinam received 115 mm and Nalmukku recorded 112 mm.
Other significant totals included 111 mm each at Chengam and Valinokkam, 105 mm at Surulakode, 96.2 mm at Adaiyamadai, 94 mm at Uthukottai and 90 mm at Shenkottai. Kuzhithurai recorded 89 mm, while Kakkachi, Perunchani and Tirukalukundram each received 86 mm.
The report also listed 85 mm at Thirparappu, 80 mm each at Needamangalam and the Nambiyar dam, 78 mm at Kulasekaram, 75 mm at Sathankulam and 70 mm each at Kovilpatti and the Gundar dam. Ponneri recorded 69 mm, Manjolai 68 mm and Usilampatti 67 mm. Kothagiri received 51 mm, while Valparai recorded 17 mm.
The distribution covers locations connected to coastal settlements, hill areas, reservoir catchments and urbanising districts. Continued heavy rain in these areas can affect road conditions, drainage networks, low-lying neighbourhoods and water infrastructure, although the report did not provide details of confirmed flooding, traffic disruption or damage.
With further rain forecast after the expected formation of the Bay of Bengal system, rainfall totals and local conditions will remain important for district administrations and residents. The Meteorological Centre’s forecast, as reported by Dinamalar, is for heavy rain to continue across Tamil Nadu.
