Polavaram Project Gets Fresh Technical Review as Dam Works Continue

The Polavaram Project received a fresh technical review on Wednesday as a four-member international expert team inspected the ongoing construction of its earth-cum-rock-fill dam and assessed progress on recommendations made during earlier visits.

The inspection brought together the international experts, officials from the Union ministry of Jal Shakti, the Polavaram Project Authority, Andhra Pradesh’s water resources department and representatives of the agencies executing the works. The review focused on construction progress and the implementation of technical recommendations issued during previous inspections.

The expert team comprises Richard Donnelly, Gianfranco Di Cicco, Sean Hinchberger and David Paul. During the visit, the members inspected the ongoing dam works and participated in a review meeting chaired by Polavaram Project Authority CEO Sanjeev Vohra.

Officials from different divisions of the Union ministry of Jal Shakti attended the meeting. The Andhra Pradesh water resources department was represented by adviser M. Venkateswara Rao and engineer-in-chief K. Narasimha Murthy. Representatives of the executing agencies also briefed the team on the status of construction and the steps taken to act on earlier technical recommendations.

The review places technical monitoring at the centre of the project’s current construction process. Rather than being limited to a site inspection, the exercise included a formal assessment of progress by the international experts and government officials responsible for oversight and implementation. The available information does not specify the individual recommendations under review or report any new technical findings from Wednesday’s inspection.

The Polavaram Project Authority is coordinating the review through its chief executive, while the Union ministry of Jal Shakti and the Andhra Pradesh water resources department are involved in monitoring and reporting on the works. The participation of executing agencies indicates that construction updates and compliance with technical recommendations were presented directly to the reviewing officials.

The earth-cum-rock-fill dam is a central component of the ongoing Polavaram irrigation project. Its construction involves multiple institutional and implementation responsibilities, requiring coordination between central officials, the state water resources department, the project authority, international experts and executing agencies. The latest inspection therefore forms part of an continuing oversight process rather than a standalone project announcement.

The international experts and central government officials will continue monitoring the ongoing works until October 17. Further updates from that monitoring period are expected to establish how the project has progressed against the recommendations examined during the current review.
