Patchwork Repairs Begin on New Town Roads

Kolkata’s New Town area is undergoing a critical road repair initiative spearheaded by the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA). The project aims to address the extensive damage sustained by roads across various sectors, including Action Areas I, II, and III. The patchwork repairs have commenced following a thorough inspection by NKDA officials who identified key thoroughfares in urgent need of attention.

The initiative, which includes the resurfacing of roads with fresh bituminous layers, is expected to improve conditions before the Durga Puja festival. The repair strategy involves scraping off the damaged bituminous surfaces with earth movers and applying new layers. Additionally, paver blocks will be used to address particularly cratered sections, similar to ongoing efforts in Salt Lake and VIP Road. NKDA has issued tenders to engage contractors for the repair work, while also overseeing the progress to ensure timely completion. Anupam Maity, a member of the Jyangra Hatiara No II gram panchayat, highlighted the deteriorated state of roads and pavements, noting that several areas have experienced significant damage. He urged NKDA to prioritise these repairs due to their impact on daily commuting and pedestrian safety.

In addition to road resurfacing, the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco) is collaborating with NKDA to repair various road stretches and pavements throughout New Town. The initiative also includes plans to construct new pavements and roads in Action Area III to enhance pedestrian convenience. The deterioration of roads has been exacerbated in some areas by microtunneling activities related to gas pipeline installations. NKDA officials have confirmed that these sections will be addressed as part of the ongoing repair works. The combined efforts of NKDA and Hidco are expected to significantly improve the infrastructure and address the concerns raised by local residents.
