A serious structural defect on Noida’s elevated road has prompted an inspection by a senior engineering team from IIT Roorkee, with the Noida Authority awaiting its report before beginning permanent repairs. One side of the road has been closed after a large cavity appeared near Sector 28, causing traffic congestion and forcing commuters to use alternative routes.
The IIT Roorkee team inspected the affected section on Thursday and is examining the strength of a 30- to 40-metre stretch around the defect. According to the report published by Navbharat Times – Noida, the road’s concrete and reinforcement bars may have lost part of their load-bearing strength. The report described the cavity as a potentially through-opening rather than routine surface damage.
The Noida Authority has temporarily covered the damaged area with soil-filled bags and concrete. Officials are waiting for the IIT team’s findings before deciding the permanent repair method. The report is expected by Saturday, after which restoration work is scheduled to begin based on the technical recommendations.
S. Singh, general manager, civil, at the Noida Authority, said the elevated road could take around 10 days to become fully operational once the repair process begins. The duration will depend on the directions issued by the IIT team after its assessment of the damaged section.
The incident has also renewed scrutiny of the elevated road’s construction history. The structure was opened in 2017 after a construction period that the report says lasted about six months. Experts cited in the report have linked the current problem to the possibility that construction material was not properly compacted during the rushed work, but the cause has not been established officially until the IIT assessment is completed.
The latest damage follows another subsidence incident near Sector 28 around 35 days earlier, according to the report. The recurrence has raised concerns about whether the problem is limited to one point or extends to a wider section of the elevated road. The IIT inspection of the surrounding stretch is intended to determine the extent of any structural weakness.
The closure of one side of the road is already affecting traffic movement in Noida. Commuters are facing longer travel times on surface roads, while alternative routes are reportedly being further constrained by illegal encroachments. The Authority’s next steps will depend on the IIT Roorkee report expected on Saturday and the permanent repair schedule that follows.
