NHAI Advances Kerala’s Longest Elevated Highway Project

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has finalised plans to construct the landing of Kerala’s longest elevated highway at the end of the Aroor-Kumbalam bridge, a strategic move aimed at enhancing traffic flow and connectivity in the region. This decision comes after deliberations considering various options, including locations near Aroor Junction and Chandiroor.

Spanning 12.75 kilometers with six lanes, the elevated highway will feature three exit ramps leading to service roads below, strategically positioned at Aroor, Chandiroor near ‘Our Lady of Mercy Hospital,’ and Kuthiyathodu. These ramps are designed to alleviate congestion and streamline access points along the busy corridor. “The landing, situated before the Aroor Junction signal, will accommodate service roads ranging from 5.5 meters to 7 meters in width, facilitating smooth two-way traffic beneath the elevated structure,” explained a senior NHAI official. The highway itself will span 24 meters in width, ensuring robust capacity for vehicular movement.

Motorists utilizing this elevated route will incur a separate toll, in addition to existing fees at the Kumbalam toll plaza. NHAI plans to establish a toll plaza near Moham Hospital, Eramalloor, to manage toll collection efficiently.

Construction efforts, which commenced in April 2023, are progressing rapidly with approximately 23% of the project completed to date. Key milestones include the construction of 120 out of 374 pillars and ongoing installation of pier cap beams, crucial for the structural integrity of the elevated highway.

“We are on track to meet our target completion date of January 2026, underscoring our commitment to delivering enhanced infrastructure within stipulated timelines,” affirmed the NHAI official, highlighting the project’s adherence to rigorous construction schedules. The elevated highway initiative not only addresses immediate traffic challenges but also anticipates future growth and urban development in Kerala’s transportation network. By leveraging modern engineering solutions and strategic planning, NHAI aims to set a benchmark for efficient infrastructure development in the region.
