The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has awarded a contract for the construction of an electric substation at the Sector 48 bus depot. The project, with an allocated budget of Rs 2.5 crore, is aimed at supporting the city’s upcoming fleet of electric buses. This substation is crucial for creating the necessary infrastructure for charging these eco-friendly vehicles, which are expected to be operational by the end of the year.
A senior official from the GMDA confirmed that the tender for the substation has been awarded, with a completion deadline set at six months. “The electric substation is a key component in our plan to integrate electric buses into Gurugram’s city bus service. The central government has already sanctioned 100 e-buses under the PM E Sewa initiative, and we anticipate acquiring an additional 200 electric buses over the next year,” the official stated.
The establishment of the electric substation is part of a broader effort to modernise Gurugram’s public transportation system and reduce the city’s carbon footprint. The move aligns with India’s national push towards sustainable urban mobility solutions. The Sector 48 bus depot, which will house these electric buses, is set to undergo a comprehensive construction project estimated to cost around ₹18 crore. The GMDA has received bids from six contractors for the depot’s construction, with only two qualifying after a stringent technical evaluation. The financial bids are expected to be opened soon, and the project will then be forwarded to the Chief Minister’s high-powered purchase committee for final approval. This step is mandatory for projects exceeding ₹10 crore, ensuring transparency and due diligence in the allocation of public funds.
The introduction of electric buses in Gurugram marks a significant step towards cleaner and more efficient urban transport. The new fleet will not only reduce emissions but also offer a quieter and more comfortable commuting experience for residents. The GMDA’s initiative is part of a larger vision to enhance the city’s infrastructure and provide sustainable solutions to meet the growing demand for public transport. As the electric substation and bus depot projects progress, they will pave the way for a greener and more efficient public transportation network in Gurugram. The successful implementation of these projects will be a testament to the city’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in urban planning.
