Navi Mumbai has launched its district-level school sports competitions for 2026-27, with more than 40,000 students from over 250 schools expected to participate in events organised by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and state sports authorities.
Mayor Sujata Patil inaugurated the competitions and said Navi Mumbai had the potential to emerge as a city of sporting talent by giving school students opportunities to demonstrate their abilities. The competitions are being conducted in association with the Directorate of Sports and Youth Services, Maharashtra, and the Thane District Sports Council.
Addressing participating students, Patil urged them to remain disciplined in both victory and defeat. “Be proud of your victories but do not let success turn into arrogance. If you lose, do not be disheartened. Prepare with renewed determination because tomorrow can be yours,” she said, according to Mid-Day.
The NMMC has been organising district-level school sports competitions for the past 16 years after receiving approval to conduct such events in 2009. This year’s programme covers 49 aided and 48 unaided sports disciplines, according to Girish Mhatre, chairman of the NMMC Sports, Cultural and Youth Welfare Committee.
The civic programme is intended to identify sporting talent among schoolchildren and create pathways for them to compete at district, state and national levels. The scale of participation makes it one of the NMMC’s largest recurring school-based civic initiatives, with students from schools across the planned city taking part through an organised competition structure.
The 2026-27 sporting calendar opened with the district-level chess competition. More than 1,650 students are participating in the chess event, including over 800 girls and 850 boys. Competitions are being held in the under-14, under-17 and under-19 categories.
The winners of the chess competition will qualify directly for the divisional-level tournament. The qualification structure gives the municipal programme a formal role in moving school-level competitors into higher stages of Maharashtra’s sports system.
NMMC Standing Committee chairman Ashok Patil said participation by more than 40,000 students demonstrated the scale of the platform being created for young sportspersons in Navi Mumbai. Civic representatives, sports officials, school representatives and officials from the Maharashtra State Chess Association attended the inauguration.
The competitions will continue across the listed sports disciplines under the civic body’s 2026-27 sporting calendar, with selected winners progressing to subsequent levels of competition.
