Navi Mumbai’s mangrove belt is showing the scale of a waste problem that extends beyond the shoreline. More than 1,300 tonnes of discarded material has reportedly been removed from mangrove and coastal areas through six years of recurring clean-up activity, with about 1.30 lakh citizens and volunteers participating. The effort has restored affected stretches, but the continued arrival of waste points to weaknesses in the city’s wider waste-management chain. The latest clean-up at Karave Jetty comes six years after the recurring initiative began there in August 2020. Earlier milestones recorded by the initiative put the waste removed at more than 1,200 tonnes after 300 consecutive weeks, indicating that the latest figure represents a further increase.
The composition of the debris is revealing. Plastic packaging, thermocol, footwear and other household and commercial waste are among the materials repeatedly found along the coastal edge. Such debris does not remain confined to one location. Drainage channels and tidal movements can carry poorly managed waste into creeks, mudflats and mangrove systems. That matters because Navi Mumbai’s coastal landscape is not simply undeveloped land waiting for urban use. The city’s sanctioned coastal-zone framework classifies mangrove areas as environmentally sensitive CRZ-I zones. The municipal planning document records about 16.33 sq km of CRZ-I area within Navi Mumbai under the applicable coastal framework. Mangroves also provide infrastructure-like benefits that are rarely captured in municipal balance sheets. They help stabilise shorelines, support aquatic biodiversity and reduce exposure to coastal hazards. Their protection therefore has implications for long-term urban resilience, particularly as development and infrastructure investment continue across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The recurring need for manual removal, however, exposes a gap between environmental restoration and prevention. A clean-up can remove accumulated debris, but it cannot by itself stop waste from entering storm-water networks or waterways. Earlier accounts of the initiative have similarly highlighted the need to address the movement of household waste towards the coast rather than relying solely on repeated collection. For Navi Mumbai mangroves, the challenge is consequently becoming more systemic. Municipal waste segregation, collection reliability, drain interception and enforcement against dumping need to work alongside ecological restoration. NMMC already identifies scientific solid-waste management and wastewater treatment among its urban infrastructure priorities, making stronger connections between those systems and coastal protection increasingly important.
The volunteer effort remains useful as a visible measure of civic participation, but its most meaningful success would be measured differently: fewer tonnes reaching the mangroves in the first place. For Navi Mumbai mangroves, preventing waste leakage upstream would offer a more durable form of coastal protection than repeatedly clearing the same ecological spaces.
