Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has installed state-of-the-art touchscreen navigation kiosks at its headquarters.

Situated in the city’s landmark circular municipal building, these digital kiosks aim to simplify wayfinding for visitors, making it easier for them to locate departments and officials’ offices with ease and efficiency. The sprawling and architecturally distinctive headquarters, while iconic, has long presented navigational challenges for the diverse range of visitors it attracts daily. Citizens visiting for various civic services, along with dignitaries and tourists intrigued by the building’s unique circular design, often found it difficult to pinpoint the correct floors or offices. Although traditional signboards and digital display screens have been in place, these were limited in interactivity and clarity, often leaving visitors reliant on staff guidance.

The newly introduced touchscreen kiosks, akin to those commonly found in modern airports and shopping malls, offer a user-centric digital experience. Users can simply tap the name of the department or official they seek on the interface. The system then provides precise floor information, navigational paths from the nearest elevator, and stepwise directions, delivered in both Marathi and English to cater to the city’s multilingual population. To enhance user convenience, frequently visited departments have been prioritised on the interface, reducing search time and improving overall efficiency. The initial kiosk installation has been completed adjacent to the central elevator on the building’s ground floor. Plans are underway to roll out additional kiosks across the second, third, and fourth floors, ensuring comprehensive digital guidance is available throughout the municipal headquarters.

Officials from NMMC emphasise that this initiative forms a critical component of a broader digital transformation agenda designed to modernise civic infrastructure and deliver a more seamless public service experience. “Digitisation is not just about online portals but creating integrated, smart environments that anticipate and resolve citizen needs proactively,” said a senior official involved in the project. The touchscreen kiosks, by facilitating easy navigation, are expected to reduce visitor confusion, cut down waiting times, and optimise foot traffic management within the premises.
