Nashik, once a city known for its abundant water resources, is grappling with a severe water crisis. Despite having enough water in the Gangapur Dam, many areas of the city are experiencing low-pressure water supply, leading to widespread dissatisfaction.
The municipal corporation has been forced to deploy thirteen water tankers daily to help alleviate the supply shortages, yet this measure has not been enough to resolve the issue for residents.The problem has particularly affected areas such as Nashik Road, Panchavati, Satpur, CIDCO, Nashik East, and Nashik West. With summer temperatures soaring, citizens are struggling to meet their daily water needs, with many forced to rely on hand pumps or fetch water from nearby societies. In the last four months alone, there have been nine protests from frustrated residents demanding a stable water supply. Despite these protests, local authorities have not taken meaningful action to address the issue, leaving residents in a state of uncertainty.

Nashik’s water supply is drawn from a combination of three dams: Gangapur, Darna, and Mukane. Together, these sources are supposed to provide around 590 to 600 million litres of water each day for the city’s population of over 21 lakh. However, the low-pressure water supply in several pockets of the city has been attributed to both natural and technical issues. Officials state that these issues are temporary, yet citizens point to poor planning and management by the Municipal Corporation as the root cause of the problem.The situation has grown worse despite the fact that the Gangapur Dam is holding enough water, with a current storage level of 68.37%, which should theoretically be sufficient to meet the city’s regular demands.
Areas such as Mahatmanagar, Indiranagar, CIDCO, Pawannagar, and Saraswati Nagar, among others, continue to face severe shortages, forcing residents to endure daily struggles just to obtain the most basic necessity.Adding to the frustration, some areas are wasting precious drinking water. Residents in certain parts of the city have been observed using potable water to wash vehicles and clean roads, causing further concern. The municipal corporation has repeatedly urged residents to conserve water, but the message has not been heeded, and this waste continues unabated.Citizens are calling for immediate and strategic action to address the crisis. They demand better planning and management to ensure that every part of Nashik receives an equitable and reliable water supply. They also stress the importance of long-term solutions to avoid recurring issues and prevent further strain on the city’s water resources.
