Mumbai’s drinking-water reserves have eased marginally but remain at a relatively strong level midway through the monsoon, with the city’s seven supplying reservoirs holding 88.70% of their combined live storage as of August 9. The latest position offers some buffer for the months ahead, but the comparison with recent years shows why reservoir management and water conservation remain important even after a substantial seasonal recovery. The seven lakes contained 12,83,826 million litres of usable water at 6am on Sunday, against a combined live-storage capacity of 14,47,363 million litres. The latest figure represents a small decline from recent readings, but leaves the reservoirs well above the levels recorded earlier in the monsoon.
Storage is not evenly distributed across the system. Vihar has reached full capacity, while Modak Sagar is also at 100%. Tulsi and Tansa remain close to their maximum usable levels. At the other end, Upper Vaitarna is at 80.14%, with Middle Vaitarna at 90.55% and Bhatsa at 86.28%. This spread matters because Mumbai relies on the combined performance of several reservoirs rather than a single water source. The current Mumbai water stock is slightly below the position recorded on the same date last year. In 2025, the seven reservoirs held 12,89,796 million litres, equivalent to 89.11% of capacity. The gap is wider when compared with 2024, when storage stood at 13,15,165 million litres, or about 90.87% of capacity. The figures indicate that the present monsoon has rebuilt supplies substantially, but has not yet matched the stronger storage position seen in those years.
For the city, reservoir levels are closely linked to the resilience of its water system. Mumbai’s demand is persistent throughout the year, while rainfall remains highly seasonal. A strong monsoon therefore has to provide enough stored water to carry the city through the dry months that follow. The latest Mumbai water stock position also highlights the value of managing demand alongside supply. Rainwater harvesting, leakage reduction, treated-water reuse and efficient consumption can reduce pressure on reservoirs without requiring new large-scale water sources. These measures become increasingly relevant as the metropolitan region continues to add housing, commercial space and infrastructure. Climate variability adds another layer of uncertainty. A year with intense rainfall can quickly refill reservoirs, while prolonged dry spells can produce sharp declines even during the same season. Heavy bursts of rain also do not always translate into efficient storage if catchment conditions, runoff and reservoir operations limit recharge.
With more monsoon weeks still ahead, the immediate picture remains relatively comfortable. The more important measure, however, will be the amount of water carried into the post-monsoon period. Maintaining a healthy reserve will require the city to treat storage as part of a wider resilience strategy, combining reliable infrastructure with disciplined water use.
