Mumbai Water Reserves Strengthen As Lakes Near Full
Mumbai’s water reserves have moved closer to a stronger monsoon buffer, with the city’s seven lakes reaching 89.05% of their useful live storage by 6 am on August 11. The increase comes as several reservoirs remain near full capacity, improving the outlook for the city’s water supply while highlighting the importance of managing storage, rainfall and catchment areas as one connected urban system. The combined stock stood at 12,88,833 million litres, compared with 88.88% a day earlier. Mumbai’s seven reservoirs have a total useful live storage capacity of 14,47,363 million litres. The latest position represents a rise of 0.17 percentage points in 24 hours, although the overall level remains marginally below the corresponding figure recorded during the same period in 2025.
The distribution of water across the reservoirs is significant. Modak Sagar was almost completely full at 99.99%, while Tansa stood at 99.10%. Middle Vaitarna had reached 91.87%, with Upper Vaitarna at 80.57%. Together, Upper Vaitarna, Vaitarna, Tansa and Middle Vaitarna held 6,33,413 million litres, or 91.19% of their combined useful storage. Bhatsa, one of the major contributors to Mumbai’s water system, was at 86.43%, holding 6,19,719 million litres. Vihar and Tulsi had both reached full useful storage. Their high levels underline how rainfall is translating into usable reserves across multiple parts of the supply network rather than being concentrated in a single reservoir.
The Mumbai water reserves position has improved sharply through the monsoon after a slower start to the season. Several reservoirs began overflowing in July, with Vihar and Tulsi reaching that stage on July 7, followed by Tansa on July 22 and Modak Sagar on July 23. Such levels provide an important buffer, but they also increase the need for careful reservoir and downstream drainage management during intense rainfall. For a city with a large and concentrated population, the value of high lake storage extends beyond daily household supply. Adequate reserves support businesses, institutions and essential services while reducing the immediate risk of supply restrictions during a prolonged dry spell. At the same time, reliable water security depends on protecting catchments, reducing distribution losses and maintaining infrastructure that can withstand increasingly variable rainfall.
The Mumbai water reserves figure is therefore a useful measure of short-term security, but not a complete measure of resilience. With the monsoon still active, further rainfall could strengthen the storage position. The longer-term challenge will be converting seasonal abundance into dependable year-round water security without increasing pressure on surrounding ecosystems and urban infrastructure.
