Mumbai is progressing with the replacement of the century-old Tilak Bridge in Dadar through a phased construction programme that will deliver a wider six-lane cable-stayed structure while maintaining traffic movement across one of the city’s busiest east-west transport corridors. The project represents a significant investment in renewing ageing urban infrastructure and improving the resilience of Mumbai’s road network amid rising travel demand. The Mumbai Tilak Bridge replacement is being undertaken jointly by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation, with construction designed to minimise disruption to both road users and railway operations. Instead of immediately dismantling the existing bridge, authorities have adopted a sequential approach by building the first section of the new structure alongside the existing crossing before shifting traffic and commencing demolition.

Constructed in the mid-1920s, the current bridge has served as an important connection between Dadar, Parel and surrounding neighbourhoods for nearly a century. However, engineering assessments undertaken as part of the city’s wider bridge safety reviews identified structural deterioration, prompting authorities to prioritise a complete replacement rather than continued repairs. Urban infrastructure specialists note that replacing ageing transport assets before they reach critical failure is increasingly becoming a key element of resilient city planning. The new bridge will comprise twin cable-stayed spans extending approximately 600 metres, ultimately providing six traffic lanes to accommodate growing vehicle volumes. Each section is being developed independently under a phased implementation strategy that allows commuters to continue using the corridor throughout construction. Once the first carriageway becomes operational, traffic will be diverted, enabling removal of the existing bridge and construction of the second span. Officials overseeing the project indicate that foundation work has already been completed, while superstructure construction and girder installation are progressing.

The construction sequence has been carefully coordinated because the bridge crosses one of Mumbai’s busiest suburban railway corridors, where uninterrupted rail operations remain essential to the city’s daily mobility. The estimated ₹375 crore investment forms part of a broader programme to modernise Mumbai’s ageing road-over-bridge network. Many bridges constructed during the city’s earlier phases of urban growth are approaching the end of their intended service life, requiring replacement to meet contemporary engineering standards and higher traffic loads. Transport planners argue that proactive infrastructure renewal reduces long-term maintenance costs while improving public safety and network reliability. Beyond increasing road capacity, the Mumbai Tilak Bridge replacement is expected to strengthen east-west connectivity across central Mumbai, supporting commuters travelling between residential neighbourhoods, commercial districts and regional highway networks. Improved traffic flow could also reduce bottlenecks that contribute to congestion, fuel consumption and transport-related emissions.

As Mumbai continues to expand its transport infrastructure, projects such as the Tilak Bridge replacement highlight the growing importance of combining structural safety with long-term mobility planning. The success of such investments will ultimately depend on timely delivery, effective traffic management during construction and integration with wider public transport and sustainable urban mobility initiatives.
