Mumbai’s critical infrastructure received a significant boost with the successful tunnel breakthrough of the Powai-Ghatkopar Water Tunnel project, marking a pivotal milestone for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). This achievement, involving the completion of 2.7 kilometres of underground tunnelling using advanced Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) technology, promises to revolutionise water supply reliability and quality in the city’s eastern suburbs. The project is a testament to Mumbai’s commitment to building sustainable, resilient, and equitable urban services for its vast population.
The breakthrough signifies the successful completion of two vital segments: a 2.045-kilometre stretch from the SCI shaft to the Ghatkopar High-Level Reservoir (HLR) and a 0.742-kilometre section connecting the Ghatkopar HLR to the Low-Level Reservoir (LLR). The deployment of TBM technology was a strategic choice for this project, executed under an Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) framework. This advanced method is inherently minimally disruptive, making it ideal for tunnelling beneath densely populated urban environments, thereby ensuring environmental safety and minimal impact on surface-level life during construction.
Once fully operational, the Powai-Ghatkopar water tunnel will serve as a crucial upgrade to Mumbai’s ageing water infrastructure. It is designed to dramatically enhance supply reliability and quality in the eastern suburbs by replacing conventional surface pipelines with a robust underground transmission system. This subterranean network is engineered to significantly minimise leakage and contamination, issues often associated with older, exposed conduits. Furthermore, the system will efficiently channel water to Ghatkopar’s reservoirs under real-time monitoring, ensuring consistent and clean water access for millions of residents.
The choice of TBM technology for this complex undertaking underscores a commitment to precision and efficiency in urban infrastructure development. Operating at an approximate depth of 60 metres, with an excavated diameter of 2.80 metres and a finished internal diameter of 2.20 metres, the machine was custom-built to navigate Mumbai’s variable geological profiles. This meticulous approach ensures long-term sustainability, operational efficiency, and greater resilience in water distribution, directly contributing to the city’s aspirations for zero net carbon and eco-friendly urban living.
This project stands as a benchmark in responsible urban infrastructure delivery, demonstrating how complex engineering can be executed with precision and discipline even under challenging conditions beneath one of India’s most densely populated cities.
