Mumbai Metro Line 2B Strengthens Urban Connectivity
Construction of the cable-stayed bridge forming part of Mumbai Metro Line 2B has entered a significant new phase after engineers successfully installed the first steel back-span segment over the Bandra railway corridor. The milestone advances one of the city’s most technically demanding transport projects, designed to improve east-west connectivity while demonstrating how complex infrastructure can be delivered within one of India’s busiest urban transport environments with minimal disruption. The newly installed steel segment, weighing approximately 70 tonnes, forms part of the bridge’s superstructure spanning the Western Railway corridor and the Western Express Highway near Bandra, where thousands of rail passengers and road users move through every day. Its successful placement marks the beginning of steel girder erection for the signature structure, following the completion of foundations, piers and substantial pylon construction.
Urban infrastructure experts describe the bridge as one of the more challenging engineering components of Mumbai Metro Line 2B, given its location above live railway tracks and heavily trafficked arterial roads. Executing large-scale lifting operations in such a constrained setting requires detailed planning, specialised equipment and carefully coordinated construction windows to ensure commuter movement remains unaffected throughout the project. The 200-metre-long cable-stayed bridge has been designed with a central span of approximately 104 metres, supported by two back spans measuring 43 metres and 53 metres. Its steel superstructure will ultimately comprise 49 composite segments, which will be assembled in stages as construction progresses. Engineers have also advanced work on the bridge pylons, with four of the six planned casting stages completed on both towers, enabling the project to transition steadily towards full superstructure installation.
The engineering approach reflects a broader shift towards infrastructure solutions capable of accommodating high-capacity public transport within densely built urban landscapes. Rather than relying solely on conventional elevated viaducts, cable-stayed structures enable longer uninterrupted spans across critical transport corridors, reducing interference with existing road and railway operations while improving long-term network resilience. Once operational, Mumbai Metro Line 2B will connect DN Nagar with Maharashtra Nagar-Mandale, creating an important east-west mobility corridor across the metropolitan region. The line will integrate with Metro Lines 1, 2A, 3 and 7, the Mumbai Monorail, and both Central and Western Railway suburban networks, supporting smoother passenger transfers and strengthening multimodal transport across the city.
Urban planners believe such integrated transit infrastructure will play an increasingly important role in reducing dependence on private vehicles, lowering transport-related emissions and improving accessibility between residential, commercial and industrial districts. As Mumbai continues expanding its metro network, projects that combine engineering innovation with uninterrupted public service delivery are expected to become central to building a more sustainable, resilient and commuter-focused urban transport system.
