Mumbai Local Trains Set for Massive Security Boost with Over 12000 New CCTV Cameras

Mumbai’s lifeline, its suburban train system, is poised for a significant security overhaul with the planned installation of 12,446 new Video Surveillance System (VSS) CCTV cameras across 1,615 coaches. This massive upgrade aims to enhance the safety of the 6.5 to 7 million daily commuters who rely on the vast network. Western Railway (WR) has finalized specifications and initiated tenders for the project, while Central Railway (CR) is also in the final stages of similar plans for its extensive corridors.

The comprehensive VSS will cover all AC and non-AC local train coaches, including shuttle services on the Churchgate-Dahanu suburban corridor. Additionally, the system will monitor motormen cabs and train managers, ensuring enhanced oversight. This project builds upon existing security measures, as ladies’ coaches and railway stations are already equipped with CCTV networks, with WR currently having 3,048 CCTVs across its suburban stations and CR having approximately 4,154.

Western Railway sources indicate that tenders for the supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the VSS will open on August 18, with work anticipated to be completed within eight to nine months of contractor finalization. The ambitious project for WR alone is estimated to cost ₹97.30 crore. This initiative forms part of a holistic security strategy refined since the 2006 Mumbai suburban serial train blasts.

Beyond CCTVs, existing security measures include Quick Reaction Teams, Bomb Detection & Disposal Squads, increased RPF-GRP joint patrolling, anti-sabotage checks, and random baggage screening. This substantial investment in surveillance technology aims to deter crime, enhance passenger monitoring, and provide critical evidence for investigations, significantly bolstering the safety and security of Mumbai’s bustling suburban rail network.
