Mumbai Green Buffer Expands Around Kanjurmarg Landfill

Mumbai has begun expanding a vegetative protection belt around the Kanjurmarg landfill as part of a broader strategy to reduce odour, improve environmental conditions and strengthen ecological safeguards around one of the city’s largest waste management sites. The initiative reflects increasing pressure on civic authorities to adopt long-term environmental solutions alongside landfill operations as surrounding residential development continues to grow. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has planted more than 7,600 saplings during the first phase of a large-scale Green Buffer Zone programme surrounding the Kanjurmarg dumping ground. The plantation forms part of a wider plan to establish approximately 15,000 trees across nearly one lakh square metres, creating a natural barrier intended to mitigate pollution while enhancing the environmental quality of the surrounding landscape.

Municipal officials have selected a mix of native and pollution-tolerant species, including neem, bamboo, arjun, karanj, jamun, peepal, banyan and gulmohar, among others. The plantation has been designed in multiple layers, with taller trees forming the outer perimeter, medium-height vegetation occupying the middle section and dense shrubs planted closer to landfill operations. Environmental planners say this layered approach can improve dust interception, reduce windborne particles and create more resilient urban biodiversity corridors. The Green Buffer Zone project follows growing judicial scrutiny over environmental conditions at the landfill, particularly concerns relating to odour, air quality and the proximity of waste processing activities to residential neighbourhoods. Urban environmental experts note that green buffers alone cannot eliminate emissions from landfill operations, but they can contribute to improved microclimates, lower particulate movement and better visual integration of large waste management facilities within dense urban areas.

Alongside plantation work, the civic administration is implementing additional mitigation measures that include scientific odour management, enhanced environmental monitoring and the gradual reorganisation of waste processing activities around the landfill. Officials are also working towards expanding the separation distance between operational waste facilities and nearby residential developments in line with recommendations aimed at reducing public health risks. Environmental researchers emphasise that tree plantation initiatives should be viewed as one component of a comprehensive landfill management strategy rather than a standalone solution. Long-term improvements will depend on scientific waste processing, methane control, leachate management, continuous air quality monitoring and accelerated remediation of legacy waste alongside ecological restoration. The choice of indigenous tree species is expected to improve long-term survival rates while supporting birds, insects and other urban wildlife. Native vegetation also generally requires lower maintenance and adapts better to local climatic conditions, making it suitable for restoring environmentally stressed landscapes such as former and active landfill sites.

As Mumbai continues to modernise its waste management infrastructure, the Green Buffer Zone initiative represents an effort to combine environmental restoration with operational improvements. The effectiveness of the programme, however, will ultimately be measured not by the number of saplings planted but by sustained ecological performance, improved public health indicators and meaningful reductions in pollution affecting neighbouring communities.
