Mumbai’s long-planned east-west transport corridor has moved closer to construction with the successful assembly and testing of the first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) for the underground section of the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR). The milestone marks the transition from preparatory works to the tunnelling phase, a critical stage in one of the city’s largest urban mobility projects aimed at reducing travel times while limiting surface-level disruption across densely developed neighbourhoods. Installed at the launch shaft near Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari in Goregaon, the machine has completed a comprehensive site acceptance process covering its mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, control and safety systems. Civic authorities are expected to begin excavation after the remaining technical clearances and operational inspections are concluded.
The GMLR Tunnel forms the centrepiece of a strategic road link connecting Goregaon in Mumbai’s western suburbs with Mulund in the east through twin underground passages extending approximately 4.7 kilometres each. Most of the tunnel alignment will have an internal boring diameter of 14.2 metres, narrowing to about 13 metres beneath the ecologically sensitive Sanjay Gandhi National Park to accommodate geological and environmental constraints. Senior civic officials recently reviewed progress at the project site, directing engineering teams to maintain construction schedules while ensuring compliance with technical and safety standards. Large-diameter tunnel boring machines are designed to minimise excavation impacts by reducing vibration, noise and surface disturbances compared with conventional cut-and-cover construction methods, making them particularly suited to heavily urbanised environments.
Urban mobility experts note that the GMLR Tunnel could significantly improve cross-city connectivity by creating an additional east-west corridor that eases pressure on existing arterial roads, where peak-hour congestion has long affected commuters, freight movement and emergency services. Better connectivity between residential and commercial districts may also support more balanced economic activity across Mumbai’s metropolitan region by shortening travel times and improving logistics efficiency. At the same time, planners argue that expanding road capacity alone cannot resolve the city’s transport challenges. They emphasise that major highway investments should operate alongside strengthened public transport, walking and cycling infrastructure to ensure long-term reductions in emissions and congestion. Integrating large infrastructure projects with sustainable mobility planning remains essential as Mumbai seeks to accommodate future population growth without increasing dependence on private vehicles.
The coming months will determine the pace of excavation as additional tunnel boring equipment is prepared for deployment. Successful completion of the underground section would represent one of the most technically demanding phases of the project, paving the way for improved east-west connectivity while underscoring the need to balance infrastructure expansion with environmental stewardship and resilient urban planning.
