Hyderabad Bus Terminal Plan Backs Public Transport

HYDERABAD: Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) is advancing plans to establish a new transport hub at Chilakalaguda as part of a broader effort to improve public transport integration, ease congestion around Secunderabad and support the city’s transition towards cleaner mobility. The proposal, linked to a land exchange with South Central Railway, reflects growing coordination between transport agencies to modernise Hyderabad’s urban mobility network.

The proposed Hyderabad bus terminal will be developed on land expected to be transferred through a swap arrangement between TGSRTC and the Railways. Under the proposal, the transport corporation would hand over a portion of its Kacheguda depot land to facilitate railway expansion while receiving an equivalent parcel at Chilakalaguda for developing a new terminal and associated transport infrastructure. Railway authorities have been seeking additional space to support the modernisation of Kacheguda railway station, which handles more than 70 train services daily and serves tens of thousands of passengers. The planned land exchange is intended to meet both railway expansion requirements and the city’s increasing demand for efficient public transport facilities. Transport planners believe the Hyderabad bus terminal could significantly reduce pressure on the busy Reti File bus station and ease traffic congestion around Secunderabad railway station. Several major city bus routes currently converge in the area, often resulting in delays, overcrowding and slower traffic movement during peak hours.

A key feature of the proposed facility is dedicated infrastructure for electric buses, including charging stations and maintenance facilities. As TGSRTC continues to expand its electric bus fleet, such infrastructure will be essential for improving operational efficiency, reducing turnaround times and supporting Hyderabad’s wider clean mobility objectives. Passenger-focused amenities such as digital information systems, waiting areas and improved boarding facilities are also planned to enhance the commuting experience. The transport proposal complements the ongoing redevelopment of Secunderabad railway station, where plans include a pedestrian skywalk connecting the station with the nearby Metro network. Urban mobility experts say seamless integration between buses, railways and metro services is critical for encouraging greater use of public transport while reducing dependence on private vehicles. Experts also point out that transport infrastructure projects should be accompanied by pedestrian-friendly streets, last-mile connectivity and transit-oriented urban planning. Such integrated approaches can improve accessibility, lower transport-related emissions and support more sustainable patterns of urban growth.

As discussions between TGSRTC and railway authorities continue, the proposed terminal represents an opportunity to reshape one of Hyderabad’s busiest transport corridors. If implemented alongside multimodal connectivity improvements, the project could strengthen public transport capacity while contributing to a more efficient, climate-conscious and commuter-focused urban mobility system.
