Commuters using one of Mumbai’s busiest suburban railway interchanges have gained improved access with the opening of a new elevated passenger deck and a wider foot overbridge at Ghatkopar station. The infrastructure upgrade is expected to ease congestion, strengthen connectivity between suburban rail and Metro services, and improve passenger circulation at a station that handles some of the city’s highest daily commuter volumes. The project, completed under the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation’s (MRVC) station improvement programme, introduces a new elevated pedestrian corridor linking the existing Metro foot overbridge with a newly constructed southern foot overbridge. Together, the facilities are designed to distribute passenger movement more efficiently while reducing crowding at key interchange points.
At the heart of the project is the Ghatkopar station elevated deck, measuring around 55 metres in length and connected to a 12-metre-wide foot overbridge spanning approximately 65 metres. The elevated deck varies in width to accommodate changing passenger flows and includes a dedicated staircase providing direct access between the suburban railway station and the Metro station building. Railway planners expect the configuration to reduce bottlenecks during peak hours by offering alternative movement routes for passengers transferring between transport systems. The upgraded infrastructure also provides improved access to multiple railway platforms through additional staircases and double-discharge landings, increasing the station’s passenger-handling capacity. Modern commuter facilities, including CCTV surveillance, digital passenger information systems, public announcement infrastructure and improved directional signage, have also been incorporated into the project. Officials indicated that passenger circulation planning and wayfinding systems were developed using recommendations from technical experts to improve safety and navigation. The opening of the Ghatkopar station elevated deck addresses long-standing concerns over overcrowding at one of Mumbai’s most important multimodal transport hubs.
Ghatkopar serves as a critical interchange between Central Railway’s suburban network and Metro Line 1, making efficient passenger movement essential for maintaining reliable public transport operations across the metropolitan region. Urban mobility specialists view the project as an example of how station redevelopment can improve public transport efficiency without expanding railway capacity alone. Better interchange infrastructure reduces transfer times, encourages greater use of mass transit and supports seamless multimodal journeys, all of which contribute to lowering dependence on private vehicles and reducing urban transport emissions. However, experts also note that sustained improvements will require complementary investments in station accessibility, last-mile connectivity and crowd management as commuter numbers continue to grow. As Mumbai’s metro network expands and suburban rail remains the backbone of daily mobility, interchange stations are expected to experience increasing pressure from rising passenger demand.
The completion of the new facilities marks another step in the ongoing modernisation of Mumbai’s suburban railway system.
