The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has deployed a large sanitation and relief contingent to flood-affected Dahanu in neighbouring Palghar district, signalling a coordinated inter-city response as western Maharashtra continues to recover from intense monsoon rainfall. The intervention focuses on restoring public hygiene, preventing disease outbreaks and accelerating the recovery of essential civic infrastructure after widespread flooding disrupted transport and public services. The municipal team, comprising 215 personnel, has been mobilised to assist local authorities in post-flood operations after continuous rainfall inundated large parts of Dahanu taluka over several days. The deployment includes sanitation workers, field supervisors and inspection staff supported by specialised equipment to clear debris, remove accumulated sludge and disinfect public areas once floodwaters fully recede.
The Dahanu flood relief operation comes as the coastal region faces extensive infrastructure damage. Floodwaters washed away sections of a key state highway connecting Dahanu with Bordi, Zai and neighbouring Gujarat, disrupting regional mobility and affecting movement of residents, emergency services and commercial traffic. Damage to road infrastructure has once again highlighted the growing vulnerability of coastal transport networks to increasingly intense rainfall events linked to changing climate patterns. Public transport infrastructure has also suffered considerable losses. Flooding affected the local State Transport (ST) bus depot, damaging operational equipment, fuel systems and administrative facilities while rendering several buses temporarily unfit for service. Authorities have initiated phased restoration of bus operations after emergency cleaning and technical inspections, with transport services expected to resume gradually as safety assessments are completed. Municipal officials indicated that the sanitation drive extends beyond debris removal. The Dahanu flood relief mission places particular emphasis on reducing the risk of waterborne and vector-borne diseases that commonly emerge following prolonged flooding. Disinfection of affected neighbourhoods, clearing stagnant water and restoring sanitary conditions are considered critical to protecting public health during the recovery phase.
