Maharashtra is preparing the next phase of capacity enhancement on one of its busiest intercity transport corridors, with the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) initiating plans to widen the existing Pune Mumbai Highway from four lanes to six. The proposed project aims to improve traffic flow, strengthen connectivity between the state’s two largest economic centres and address congestion that continues despite the parallel Mumbai–Pune Expressway. The state agency has begun preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to define the engineering, financial and environmental framework for the project. Preliminary estimates place the investment requirement between ₹5,000 crore and ₹6,000 crore, with authorities expected to finance the expansion through toll revenues over an extended concession period.
Unlike the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, which has already undergone expansion to accommodate growing traffic demand, the older Pune Mumbai Highway continues to serve a diverse mix of passenger vehicles, freight transport and local traffic. Infrastructure experts note that increasing economic activity, industrial growth and tourism have steadily raised traffic volumes, particularly through the Lonavala and Khandala ghat sections where terrain constraints frequently contribute to congestion and slower travel speeds. According to officials involved in the planning process, the project is expected to include selective alignment improvements, additional road links and geometric corrections at critical locations to improve safety and reduce travel delays. These interventions are intended not only to increase road capacity but also to improve traffic movement through challenging mountainous stretches that experience heavy seasonal demand. The financial model under consideration would recover project costs through toll collections, potentially extending the existing toll collection period beyond its current approval timeline. While such an approach reduces the immediate fiscal burden on the state, transport economists emphasise that long-term toll extensions should be accompanied by transparent cost disclosures, measurable service improvements and regular maintenance commitments to ensure value for road users.
From an urban development perspective, improved connectivity between Mumbai and Pune has broader economic implications. The corridor supports manufacturing, logistics, education, tourism and real estate activity across western Maharashtra, making it one of India’s most strategically important transport links. Faster and more reliable travel can strengthen regional supply chains and improve labour mobility, but planners caution that road expansion alone may not provide a permanent solution to increasing travel demand. Urban mobility specialists argue that future transport planning should balance highway investments with stronger public transport networks, multimodal freight systems and low-carbon mobility initiatives. Integrating road upgrades with rail infrastructure and sustainable logistics strategies could help reduce long-term congestion and environmental impacts while supporting regional economic growth.
As the DPR progresses, environmental assessments, engineering feasibility and traffic projections will shape the final project design. The proposed highway expansion represents another major infrastructure investment for Maharashtra, but its long-term success will depend on delivering safer mobility, climate-resilient construction and balanced regional connectivity alongside increased road capacity.
