Mumbai Digital Healthcare Plan Brings AI To Hospitals
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is preparing a phased transformation of its public health network with a comprehensive digital modernisation strategy that combines artificial intelligence, data-driven hospital management and expanded community healthcare services. The initiative is aimed at improving patient access, reducing waiting periods and making municipal hospitals more responsive as demand for affordable healthcare continues to grow across India’s financial capital. The roadmap, reviewed during a high-level meeting of senior civic health officials, outlines a three-stage programme that will gradually integrate digital systems into hospital operations while strengthening service delivery across the municipal healthcare network. The plan reflects a broader shift towards technology-enabled governance, where digital infrastructure is expected to support more efficient and equitable access to public services.
The first phase centres on implementing Digital Healthcare systems across outpatient departments to streamline patient registration, consultation and hospital workflows. Civic authorities also intend to strengthen the hospital management information system and establish a central command dashboard capable of monitoring healthcare services in real time. Alongside technology upgrades, recruitment efforts will be accelerated to fill vacant medical positions, while insurance facilitation desks are expected to improve access to government and health insurance schemes for patients requiring financial assistance. In the second phase, the municipal administration plans to pilot an online hospital bed allocation platform that will automatically identify available beds across civic hospitals, reducing delays for patients awaiting admission. Pilot round-the-clock dispensaries are also proposed in every municipal ward to improve access to primary healthcare beyond conventional working hours, particularly for residents who rely on public medical facilities during emergencies.
Artificial intelligence is expected to play a growing role during this stage through its application in radiology, pathology and hospital resource management. Healthcare experts believe AI-assisted diagnostics can help improve reporting speed, optimise clinical workflows and support medical professionals in handling increasing patient volumes. However, they also emphasise that successful implementation will depend on robust clinical validation, staff training, data security and ethical governance. The roadmap further includes structured training programmes focused on patient communication, medical ethics and service quality, recognising that digital transformation must be accompanied by improvements in patient experience. Officials are also examining partnership models that could extend financial support to economically vulnerable patients requiring specialised treatment, reducing barriers to accessing quality healthcare. The final phase of the programme aims to strengthen institutional quality by pursuing national and international healthcare certifications, including NABH accreditation, while upgrading hospitals to become more accessible for persons with disabilities. Expanded digital services are also expected to improve continuity of care and administrative efficiency across the civic health system.
