Mumbai Coastal Road to Open New Infrastructure Features
Mumbai’s ambitious coastal road project is set to unveil a host of new infrastructure features, which will transform both the city’s skyline and mobility landscape. As part of the 10.58-km high-speed corridor between Marine Drive and the Bandra Worli Sea Link, two major components are nearing completion ahead of the monsoon season: a 7.5-km-long promenade and a 550-metre vehicular underpass. These additions are designed not only to enhance traffic flow but also to create public spaces for residents and visitors along the scenic coastline.
The Rs 13,000-crore project, which involves the reclamation of 111 hectares of land from the Arabian Sea, aims to create open spaces and greener areas for the public. Of the reclaimed land, 70 hectares will be dedicated to promenades, parks, and recreational spaces. The newly constructed promenade, stretching between Priyadarshini Park (PDP) and Worli, will offer uninterrupted views of the Arabian Sea. Equipped with jogging tracks, seating areas, and patches of greenery, it promises to become a new hub for public recreation. The landscaping, inspired by Hong Kong’s coastal design, includes indigenous palm trees and shrubs sourced from across India.
Not only will the promenade serve as a leisure space, but it will also provide vital access through 20 pedestrian underpasses, which are being completed in tandem with the promenade. These underpasses will connect the landside to the promenade, ensuring easy access for people across the city. At 20 metres wide, the promenade will feature tactile tiles to accommodate people with disabilities, ensuring inclusivity for all residents.
Additionally, by April, the coastal road will open its first vehicular underpass, a 550-metre tunnel designed to ease congestion in the Worli area.
This underpass will accommodate southbound traffic from Dadar and Prabhadevi, providing a direct route to the western suburbs and Marine Drive. By offering a faster route for commuters, the underpass will help reduce congestion and traffic bottlenecks that have long plagued this part of Mumbai. As the city inches closer to completing this monumental infrastructure project, the coastal road will become a critical part of Mumbai’s growing transport network. Designed to alleviate traffic congestion while enhancing public spaces, these new additions will provide much-needed relief to the city’s residents, offering them both improved mobility and a chance to reconnect with nature along the coastline.
