The next phase of the Mumbai Coastal Road programme has entered a decisive stage, with authorities targeting completion of the Bandra–Versova–Bhayander corridor by December 2028 and extending the deadline to March 2029 if required. The project represents one of the city’s largest transport investments, intended to improve north-south connectivity while easing mounting traffic pressure on Mumbai’s overstretched western road network. A recent review of major urban infrastructure projects assessed progress on the coastal corridor alongside the proposed Madh–Versova Bridge and a planned desalination facility aimed at strengthening long-term water resilience. Officials indicated that construction on the Bandra–Versova section is advancing, while work on the Versova–Bhayander stretch has moved ahead after securing statutory approvals.
Urban mobility specialists view the Mumbai Coastal Road as a strategic intervention for a city constrained by its narrow peninsula geography. With limited scope for widening existing arterial roads, transport demand has consistently outpaced available capacity, particularly along the Western Express Highway and adjoining suburban corridors. The proposed coastal alignment is expected to create an additional high-capacity route connecting south Mumbai with the rapidly expanding western suburbs. Once fully operational, the eight-lane signal-free corridor is projected to significantly reduce travel times between southern and northern parts of the city while improving freight movement and commuter reliability. The northern extension is also expected to strengthen connectivity with emerging residential and commercial centres in Mira-Bhayander, where sustained population growth has increased pressure on transport infrastructure.
Infrastructure experts note that the benefits of the corridor will depend not only on road construction but also on integration with complementary projects, including interchanges, tunnels, bridges and public transport systems. Improved multimodal connectivity could reduce congestion bottlenecks and support more efficient movement across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, provided planning remains coordinated across agencies. However, the project continues to attract scrutiny over its environmental implications. Sections of the alignment pass through ecologically sensitive coastal zones where mangroves perform an essential role in protecting shorelines, storing carbon and reducing flood risks. Previous judicial oversight has required compensatory plantation, ecological monitoring and compliance with environmental safeguards before work can progress. Urban planners argue that future infrastructure investments must embed climate resilience into project design rather than treating environmental protection as a post-construction obligation. Authorities have also indicated that concerns raised by fishing communities are being considered during implementation, reflecting the need to balance regional infrastructure expansion with the livelihoods of coastal residents. Alongside transport investments, the proposed desalination plant reviewed during the meeting is expected to diversify Mumbai’s water sources and support growing suburban demand.
As construction progresses over the coming years, the success of the Mumbai Coastal Road will ultimately be measured not only by faster journeys but also by its ability to deliver resilient infrastructure that protects coastal ecosystems, supports inclusive urban growth and responds to the long-term needs of one of India’s fastest-growing metropolitan regions.
