Mumbai Basks in Mild Winter Delight
As Mumbai inches towards the end of its brief winter season, residents can expect pleasant weather with cool afternoons throughout the week. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the maximum and minimum temperatures over the next 48 hours in Mumbai city and its suburbs will range between 31–33°C and 16–18°C, respectively. Clear skies with slight morning haze are predicted to dominate the weather pattern.
On Sunday, the Colaba Observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 27.9°C—2.3°C below the seasonal average. The minimum temperature stood at 20°C, with several parts of the city witnessing afternoon temperatures below 25°C, a rare treat for Mumbaikars to enjoy the fleeting winter chill. This comes after a week of extreme fluctuations in the mercury levels. Just days ago, Mumbai recorded one of its highest January temperatures at 36°C, followed by a sharp drop to a minimum of 15.2°C. Meteorologists attribute these swings to disturbances in the westerly wind patterns. While the temperature shifts initially impacted the city’s air quality and public health, recent breezes have brought much-needed respite.
Mumbai’s Air Quality Index (AQI) has shown marked improvement, shifting from the ‘Very Poor’ category to ‘Moderate’ across most regions. Some areas even reported ‘Satisfactory’ AQI on Sunday, including Powai (74), Kandivali East (73), and Bandra-Kherwadi (99). However, certain localities such as Malad West (160) and Borivali East (133) continue to remain under the ‘Moderate’ category. With the IMD forecasting consistent temperatures and improving air quality, Mumbaikars can look forward to embracing mild weather conditions and clearer skies in the coming days, a welcome relief from the fluctuating extremes witnessed recently.
