HYDERABAD: Hyderabad is expected to experience another spell of unsettled weather on August 23 and 24, with light to moderate rain or thundershowers and gusty winds forecast across parts of the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that intense spells could lead to water accumulation, slippery roads and temporary disruptions to urban mobility.
The Meteorological Centre at Begumpet Airport issued an impact-based forecast on August 23, indicating generally cloudy conditions on both days. Rainfall activity is expected to be accompanied by winds reaching 30–40 kmph in parts of Hyderabad. Temperatures are forecast to remain relatively moderate, with maximum readings around 30°C and minimum temperatures near 22°C. Surface winds are expected to remain light, although stronger gusts could accompany thunderstorms. On August 23, winds are forecast to be predominantly westerly, while south-westerly winds are expected on August 24. The combination of rainfall and strong gusts creates several short-term risks for a densely built city. Water can accumulate quickly on roads where drainage capacity is limited, while wet surfaces can reduce vehicle braking efficiency. The impact can be particularly significant on busy arterial roads and at low-lying junctions during peak commuting periods.
The IMD has specifically flagged the possibility of water pooling in roads and low-lying locations. It has also warned of slippery road conditions, highlighting the need for additional caution from motorists and two-wheeler users. For the city administration, rainfall preparedness is not limited to clearing water from roads. Storm-water drains, road construction sites, trees, electrical infrastructure and temporary structures can all become points of vulnerability when rainfall is accompanied by strong winds. The forecast also underlines the importance of maintaining unobstructed drainage channels during the monsoon. Rapid urban development has increased the amount of paved and built-up surface across Hyderabad, reducing the natural absorption of rainwater in many locations. This can increase runoff and place greater pressure on drainage infrastructure during intense showers.
Municipal authorities may issue local advisories where conditions warrant restrictions or other precautions. Residents in vulnerable and low-lying areas may need to monitor official weather and civic updates as conditions can change rapidly during thunderstorms. For commuters, the immediate priority will be adjusting travel plans where necessary and avoiding waterlogged stretches. As Hyderabad continues to expand, repeated episodes of intense rainfall also reinforce the need for long-term investment in drainage, flood-sensitive urban planning and climate-resilient infrastructure.
