Hyderabad Power Expansion Targets Long Term Energy Security
HYDERABAD: Telangana is planning a broader expansion of its electricity system as rising demand puts pressure on generation and transmission capacity. The State government has outlined a long-term strategy that combines grid strengthening with greater reliance on solar, hydropower, pumped storage and battery storage to support future consumption.
Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister said electricity demand had increased from around 13,000 MW in 2024 to nearly 18,000 MW in 2026. The sharp rise has prompted the State to focus on advance procurement, transmission upgrades and additional generation capacity to maintain reliable supply. The State’s power strategy is increasingly tied to the growth of its wider economy. Agriculture, manufacturing, services and emerging technology-driven industries all require dependable electricity, making grid reliability an important consideration for both public infrastructure and private investment. The government is also seeking to diversify the generation mix rather than depend predominantly on thermal power. Solar and hydropower projects, along with pumped-storage and battery systems, are expected to play a larger role in managing future electricity requirements.
Storage is particularly important as Telangana adds more variable renewable generation. Solar output changes through the day, while electricity consumption often peaks at different times. Pumped storage and batteries can help shift available power to periods of higher demand and improve grid flexibility. The government has indicated that planning needs to begin well before capacity becomes necessary. Power generation projects can take four to five years to establish, making long-term forecasting critical. Officials have consequently been asked to prepare targets extending to 2047 and align generation and transmission planning with expected economic and population growth. The State is also attempting to improve the consumer-facing side of electricity services. The 1912 helpline and mobile power-response teams are being used to address supply-related complaints, with the latter equipped to respond to faults and equipment failures in the field.
Technology is another part of the proposed modernisation. Officials are working on in-house digital systems that can provide information linked to individual consumer numbers, including service locations and electricity supply sources. Greater access to such information could improve transparency and help utilities respond more efficiently to complaints. The shift towards non-thermal sources could also have wider environmental implications. Increasing renewable generation can reduce dependence on fossil-fuel-based electricity, provided grid expansion and storage capacity develop alongside new clean-energy projects. For Telangana, the central challenge will be matching rapid demand growth with an electricity system that is reliable, financially sustainable and increasingly lower-carbon. The decisions taken on generation, transmission and storage over the next decade will shape the State’s ability to support industrial expansion while managing its long-term energy transition.
