Monsoon Exposes Critical Flaws in Bhopal BRTS Design

The recently reconstructed Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) in Bhopal has come under intense scrutiny as the monsoon season reveals glaring design deficiencies, posing significant risks to pedestrians and motorists across the state capital.

Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) has faced mounting criticism for overlooking these issues, which culminated on Wednesday in a brief spell of monsoon rainfall inundating the BRTS corridor, leaving numerous vehicles stranded in knee-deep water.

“The design flaws in the BRTS are alarming and demand immediate rectification before any further payments are released to the private contractor,” remarked a BMC official, highlighting the urgency to address safety and operational concerns. Despite persistent delays in the project timeline, the private contractor responsible for the BRTS construction has not faced penalties for these shortcomings. Regarding allegations of electricity theft during the construction phase, BMC officials redirected responsibility to the power distribution company, urging a thorough investigation.

One of the prominent deficiencies noted is the absence of pedestrian crossovers along the BRTS corridor. Despite directives from the district collector two months ago, BMC has yet to implement remedial measures to enhance pedestrian safety. Bus stops, originally designated within the central corridor, have been relocated to pedestrian and cycle tracks, rendering the cycle lanes unusable. This move has exacerbated traffic congestion and compromised the intended functionality of the BRTS.

“The private contractor was contractually obligated to complete the project by May 30, yet significant work remains outstanding, including essential tasks like tree plantation along the Roshanpura to Kilol Park stretch,” added the BMC official, underscoring ongoing project mismanagement. Concerns have been raised about inadequate clearing of debris and rubble from the central cemented divider before its soil cover, reflecting lapses in construction oversight by BMC.

As criticisms mount and operational disruptions persist, stakeholders urge BMC to prioritise public safety and swiftly address the BRTS’s design deficiencies. The unfolding situation underscores the imperative for stringent project oversight and adherence to quality standards in urban infrastructure development.
